SIA KARAVELA is one of the leading and largest producers of canned fish and preserves in Europe with 140 years of experience in the production of canned fish and other fish products. The company has undergone various changes in its history - both in local and export markets, which has constantly provided motivation to adapt to the situation, change standards and raise quality. Our greatest value is the company's management and team that have the courage and ability to take risks, which are always associated with new challenges, new markets and product creation.

      Company history

      • 1882

        Scandinavian businessman Arnold Sørensen founds a company in Riga producing tin cans, canned fruit, vegetables and fish

      • 1920

        After World War I, a flying seagull with the fish in its beak becomes a trade mark of the company and KAIJA (“seagull” in Latvian) becomes the brand name

      • 1938

        The total value of goods produced reaches 3 million euros (in today’s value). The company employs 360 people and exports its produce to Europe and the USA. Various awards are won at international exhibitions and fairs

      • 1966

        The company is now named “The experimental factory of canned fish and culinary products” and exports its produce all over the USSR

      • 1976

        The company unites with Riga Sardines factory

      • 1995

        The company is the largest processor of Atlantic fish in the Baltic states. It spans an area of 11 ha, employs 720 people and exports all over the CIS countries

      • 2003-2004

        The company goes through bankruptcy and reorganisation, the Arnold Sørensen and Kaija brands are retained. Only 4 export markets remain when the company renews its activities

      • 2013

        5 million euros are invested in renovation of the production area and new production lines

      • 2017

        Karavela becomes one of the biggest canned fish producers in Europe, with 56 million cans produced per year and 40 export countries around the world

      • 2019

        Karavela acquires Larsen Danish Seafood, growing its position in the German market

      • 2021

        A new vegan canned fish brand F'SH PEAS was created and 8 products in three product groups were presented on the market - vegan fish salad, vegan fish flakes and vegan fish spreads
